Install or update Shiny Relay
Shiny Relay is installed from a browser: open install.shinyrelay.com on a computer and follow its steps. The same page has the current version when there is an update. It is an install on your Chromatic, and the stock firmware can be restored.
Use Chrome or Edge on a computer, with one Chromatic plugged in by a USB cable that carries data. Phones and tablets cannot do it.
After the install, put the Chromatic on Wi-Fi in SYSTEM > WI-FI.
Pair your Chromatic
Pairing ties the Chromatic to your Shiny Gen account, so it can join your rooms and be invited.
- On the Chromatic open SYSTEM > ONLINE and press A to pair.
- Scan the QR code, or enter the code at shinygen.ai/link while signed in.
SYSTEM > ONLINE shows when the Chromatic is paired.
Before you play online
- Your Chromatic has Shiny Relay installed (install.shinyrelay.com) and is on Wi-Fi.
- It is paired to your Shiny Gen account: on the Chromatic open SYSTEM > ONLINE and press A to pair, then scan the QR code or enter the code at shinygen.ai/link while signed in.
- Both sides play the same game.
Way 1: invite your Chromatic (no code)
For a Chromatic paired to the account you are signed in with.
- In the Shiny Gen app or on shinygen.ai, open the game and choose MULTIPLAYER, then HOST.
- Choose INVITE MY CHROMATIC and pick your Chromatic.
- On the Chromatic, start the same game and choose MULTIPLAYER. It joins by itself.
Way 2: room code (any two players)
To host on the Chromatic:
- Start the game and choose MULTIPLAYER. The room menu opens (or press MENU, then NETWORK).
- Choose HOST. Your room code shows on screen.
- The other player chooses MULTIPLAYER, then JOIN, and enters the code.
To join on the Chromatic:
- The other player hosts and tells you the code.
- Start the game and choose MULTIPLAYER. In the room menu choose JOIN CODE.
- Enter the code with the D-pad, press A, then press MENU to close the menu.
Link-cable games (Tetris, Pokemon and others)
- Two Chromatics near each other: set LINK CABLE to NEARBY on both and play as with a cable.
- Over the internet: host and join a room as above, then start the game's own link mode on both.
- Turn-based games (trades, battles) play well online. Fast games that send every frame can lag.
The web player
shinyrelay.com/play plays Shiny Gen's Game Boy Color games, or a game file of your own, in a browser. Playing alone needs no sign-in, and your own file stays in your browser.
To play with a Chromatic from the web player:
- Open the game and choose Multiplayer on the page, then sign in with your Shiny Gen account.
- In the game choose MULTIPLAYER. On the page choose Host a room and enter its code on the Chromatic with JOIN CODE, or type the Chromatic's code and choose Join.
- With the same account on both, choose My devices on the page and MY DEVICES on the Chromatic. They meet with no code.
For link-cable games the page has Link cable: host or join a cable there, then start the game's own link mode on both.
Install a game on the Tetris cartridge
The cartridge page at install.shinyrelay.com/cart writes a game or an app to your ModRetro Tetris cartridge over USB. You do not need a flash cart. It backs up the cartridge first, and the same page puts your Tetris back any time.
What you need
- A Chromatic with Shiny Relay installed, switched ON, with the cartridge in it. Charge it, or put in fresh AA batteries.
- Chrome or Edge on a Mac, Windows or Linux computer. Phones and tablets cannot reach the cartridge.
- A USB cable that carries data, plugged straight into the computer. Only one Chromatic plugged in.
- Close the Shiny Relay installer tab and ModRetro's updater, so only this page uses the Chromatic.
Steps
- Choose. Pick what goes on the cartridge: a free Shiny Gen game or app, the PARTY BATTLE patch for Tetris, or the + cartridge for your own game file (.gbc or .gb). To put your own save file (.sav) on with the game, use Use my save file (optional) right under your choice. To change only the save and keep the game that is on the cartridge, pick Just a save file.
- Connect. Click Connect and pick Chromatic - Player 01. Click Connect once more and pick GWU2X. Chrome asks twice because the Chromatic shows up as two devices, and it asks for GWU2X again on each visit.
- Prepare. Click Prepare my Chromatic. It takes about 1 to 2 minutes and the Chromatic restarts twice. This loads temporary cartridge access. Nothing is installed.
- Back up. Click Back up my cartridge, then save the game file and the save file. Keep the 2 files together: they are your way back to Tetris. You can skip the backup, but then the game on the cartridge now cannot be put back from this page. To only copy your cartridge's game and save to this computer, with nothing installed, click Save my cartridge's game and save to this computer in step 1.
- Install. Click Install, type INSTALL and click Start. Keep the cable in and the Chromatic on until it says done.
- Turn your Chromatic off and on. When the page says Done, slide the power switch OFF, wait 2 seconds, then ON.
Limits
- Game file: up to 1.94 MB (2,031,616 bytes).
- Save file: up to 32 KB (32,768 bytes).
- The cartridge behaves as an MBC5 cartridge. Most games work, but not all. There is no real-time clock, so a clock in a game will not run. There is no rumble, no motion sensor and no other special hardware.
- One game is on the cartridge at a time.
How long it takes
- Backup: about 2 minutes for a small game such as Tetris, about 5 minutes for 1 MB, about 8 minutes for a full cartridge.
- Write: about 2 minutes for a small game (256 KB), about 4 minutes for 1 MB, about 8 minutes for the largest (1.94 MB).
Your files
Everything happens in your browser. The game file you choose is your own file, and it never leaves your computer. Nothing is uploaded. Only use cartridges and files that are yours. We host no games besides our own free ones.
Get Tetris back
Open the cartridge page and click Restore a backup under the grid. Pick the 2 backup files you saved, the game file and the save file, then Connect and Prepare, and click Restore my backup (type RESTORE). In the same visit, Restore my Tetris backup on the Done step does it for you. Keep the backup files safe: they are the sure way back.
Tetris patch: PARTY BATTLE
PARTY BATTLE is a patch for ModRetro Tetris v1.4, for a Chromatic with Shiny Relay:
- No-lag 2-player: MULTIPLAYER, then HOST on one Chromatic and JOIN CODE on the other, nearby or online. On a real link cable the game plays as before.
- PARTY: a public battle with up to 100 players. MULTIPLAYER, PARTY, then MY DEVICES in the room menu. Clear lines to send garbage; the last one standing wins.
The cartridge page applies a patch straight to your own cartridge:
- In Choose, pick the PARTY BATTLE cartridge.
- Do Connect and Prepare as above.
- In Back up, the page reads your Tetris from the cartridge. Save the copy: it is your way back to the original. Or click I already have a copy of my Tetris file and pick a copy you saved before.
- In Install, type INSTALL and click Start. The page patches the game in your browser, checks it and writes it.
- Turn your Chromatic off and on.
With the backup, the whole thing takes about 5 minutes.
- To remove the patch, put the original back.
- To go back: click Restore my Tetris backup, or on a later visit use Restore a backup under the grid and pick your 2 saved files.
- Only v1.4. For another version of Tetris, update the cartridge with ModRetro's Cart Clinic first, then come back.
- Cart Clinic may not recognise a patched cartridge until the original is back on it.
- A patched cartridge needs a Chromatic with Shiny Relay. Without it, the game plays as the original.
- The patch contains none of the game: only our own code and the places where it hooks in.
Playing in an emulator? Patch a file yourself from your own copy of the game.
Internet apps
Five small apps use the Chromatic's Wi-Fi. They are free. Install one on the cartridge like any game (steps above).
- Shiny Almanac: weather, a clock, a calendar and a world map to walk around.
- Daily Trace: a daily puzzle with a worldwide board.
- Shiny Canvas: one shared canvas that everyone paints on.
- Pick a Side: the poll of the day.
- Dispatch: ModRetro's posts.
- The Chromatic must be on Wi-Fi (SYSTEM > WI-FI).
- Reading needs no account.
- Voting, painting and posting a score need the Chromatic paired to a Shiny Gen account.
- The apps also run in the web player and in the Shiny Gen app.
Shiny Gen's own Game Boy Color games are free to install too. Games you make in Shiny Gen can go on your Chromatic. Exporting your own creations needs the paid export in Shiny Gen.
Go back to stock
- The Chromatic: restore the backup the installer made at install.shinyrelay.com, or use ModRetro's free Chromatic Firmware Updater. Either one puts the stock firmware back.
- The cartridge: write your 2 backup files back with the cartridge page (Get Tetris back).
- The cartridge page itself installs nothing on the Chromatic. Its cartridge tool is gone when you switch the Chromatic off and on.
If it does not connect
- Check Wi-Fi in SYSTEM > WI-FI and that the Chromatic is paired (SYSTEM > ONLINE shows it).
- No Chromatic in the invite list: it is paired to another account. Pair it again from yours (SYSTEM > ONLINE, A, then shinygen.ai/link). The list shows after you HOST.
- Both players need the same game. An older copy of a Shiny Gen game may say FRIEND HAS AN OLDER COPY.
If a cartridge write goes wrong
- The page says to use Chrome or Edge: open it in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a computer. Other browsers, phones and tablets cannot reach the Chromatic over USB.
- GWU2X is not in the list: wait a few seconds. If it still does not show, unplug the USB cable for 5 seconds, plug it back in and click Connect again.
- More than one Chromatic: the page works on one at a time. Unplug the others.
- The Chromatic is in use: close the installer tab, ModRetro's updater and any other program that has the Chromatic open.
- Do not unplug or switch off during a write. Keep the tab open until the page says Done.
- A write stopped: the cartridge will not start a game until the write finishes. Plug the Chromatic back in, do Connect and Prepare the Chromatic again, choose the same file and click the button again. It carries on from where it stopped.
- A backup stopped: the cartridge was only read, so nothing is lost. Plug the cable back in and start again at Connect. What was already read is kept while the tab stays open.
- A game does not start: not every game works on this cartridge (see Limits). Put another game on it, or put Tetris back.
- You want Tetris back: write your 2 backup files with the cartridge page (Get Tetris back).
